Feather And Fan Socks Knitting PatternDesigned by Vicky Peterson This sock pattern fits women and uses a traditional Feather & Fan (or ripple stitch) stitch pattern. Gauge:2 Feather and Fan repeats = 3½" Total of 36 sts = 3½" See pattern under "Leg" to use for gauge. Materials: 2 skeins Lang Jawoll Color Superwash 45 g/190 m Size 1 US (2.25 mm) set of 5 double point needles (if using reinforcement thread use needles one size smaller for these sections) Reinforcement thread if desired Stitch Markers Blunt eyed needle Instructions Cuff Using the Twisted German Cast On, CO 72 sts. Divide over 4 needles and join. Work in K2, P1 rib for 1 to 2 inches. Leg Place a stitch marker between each pattern repeat Rnd 1: K2tog three times, (yo, k1) six times, k2tog three times; rep around. Rnd 2: P Rnds 3 and 4: K Rnd 5: Rep Rnd 1 Rnd 6: P Rnds 7 and 8: K Rnd 9: Rep Rnd 1 Rnd 10: *K5, p9, k4; rep from * around Rnd 11: Knit around. Rnd 12: Knit around. Rnd 13: Repeat Rnd 1 Rnd 14: (K5, P9, K4) around. Rnds 15 and 16: K Repeat Rnds 1-16 until 8" or desired length. Heel Flap If using reinforcement thread, attach it here and switch to smaller needles. Turn so you are working on the WS (inside) of the sock. You will be working across 36 sts over two needles. Row 1 (WS): Sl 1, p35 Row 2: Sl 1, k35 Rep these two rows until 2¼". End with WS row completed. Turn Heel Row 1: Sl 1, k20, SSK, k1, turn. Row 2: Sl 1, p7, p2tog, p1, turn. Row 3: Sl 1, k8, SSK, k1, turn. Row 4: Sl 1, p9, p2tog, p1, turn. Row 5: Sl 1, k10, SSK, k1, turn. Row 6: Sl 1, p11, p2tog, p1, turn. Row 7: Sl 1, k12, SSK, k1, turn. Row 8: Sl 1, p13, p2tog, p1, turn. Row 9: Sl 1, k14, SSK, k1, turn. Row 10: Sl 1, p15, p2tog, p1, turn. Row 11: Sl 1, k16, SSK, k1, turn. Row 12: Sl 1, p17, p2tog, p1, turn. Row 13: Sl 1, k18, SSK, k1, turn. Row 14: Sl 1, p19, p2tog, p1, turn. Row 15: Sl 1, k21, do NOT turn. If using reinforcement thread, cut it here and switch to larger needles. Gusset Begin Feather and Fan Foot Pattern and work across the 36 instep sts for now. The Heel and Gusset sts are worked in St st until the Gusset is completed. Feather and Fan Foot Pattern Rnd 1: K2tog three times, (yo, k1) six times, k2tog three times; rep around. Rnds 2, 3 and 4: K Using Needle 1 (the one used for the heel flap), pick up 1 st for each of the slipped edge sts along the heel flap and 1 additional st where the heel flap and instep join. Using Needle 2, work across instep in Feather and Fan Foot Pattern. Using Needle 3, pick up 1 st where instep and heel flap join and 1 st for each of the slipped sts along the other edge of the heel flap. Then knit 11 heel sts. Rnd 1: K around to end of Needle 2 (keeping to the instep pattern); the first st of Needle 3 will become the beginning of each round. Rnd 2: At beginning of Needle 3, K1, SSK. Then K to last 3 sts of Needle 1, K2tog, K1, keeping to the pattern for instep. Rnd 3: Work even, keeping to pattern for instep. Repeat Rnds 3 and 4, keeping to pattern for instep until you have 72 sts. Foot Work Feather and Fan Foot Pattern all the way around. Work these four rounds until foot is 2¼" less than desired length. Toe If using reinforcement thread, attach it here and switch to smaller needles. Rnd 1: At beginning of Needle 3, K1, SSK, k to last 3 sts of Needle 1, k2tog, k1. At beginning of Needle 2, 1, SSK, k to last 3 sts of Needle 2, k2tog, k1. Rnd 2: K around with no decreases. Repeat Rnds 1 and 2 until 18 sts remain. Graft with the Kitchener Stitch.
