Learn To KnitCasting On: Twisted German Cast On This cast on method has a very elastic and neat edge. It makes a great cast on technique for socks. You will only be using one color of yarn; two colors of yarn to make the steps easier to follow. Start with the traditional long tail cast on method. The pink yarn goes to the free end; the blue strand goes to the ball of yarn. Insert your needle under both loops of the pink yarn, pointing toward the index finger. Now come backwards into the pink loop with the needle pointing toward you. Bend your thumb toward the index finger, twisting the loop with the needle through it open so you can scoop the blue yarn back through the loop. Scoop the blue yarn back through the twisted loop (the loop that you just opened by bending your thumb). This shows the actual scoop of the blue yarn through the pink loop. The blue yarn through the pink loop and is now on the needle. Drop the pink loop off the thumb. Snug the yarns up against the needle. Here you can see the neat double twist of the pink yarn under the needle. Contributed by Sande Francis The Complete Idiot's Guide To Knitting
