Anneke's Needleworks
5851 Sunset Drive
Miami, FL 33143

Reviewed by Sharon Ruiz

This is a beautiful, sunny store on the second floor in a lovely area of Miami. I was able to spend alot of time just choosing from an amazing and FUN selection of yarns - the staff was very helpful and friendly. I think the knitting section is a bit newer than the needlepoint section, but it's so well-stocked I just loaded up on yarn and needles for new projects. I'm a very basic knitter, and I hadn't realized that just by using some really fun yarns I could make completely professional-looking scarves. Let me just add that the needlepoint section is amazing! I live in New York City, and you wouldn't think I had to go as far as Miami to get great canvases, but I've never seen so many gorgeous hand-painted canvases and great fibers. I can't say enough about this store, except if you're anywhere near Miami, you have to go! You'll thank me.

The shop is well organized. About a third of the shop is devoted to needlepoint. Two knitters were in the shop working on their projects.

The yarns were beautiful, arranged by color tones; however, there were no prices on them. Plenty of notions and books were available for sale with price tags. They carry Birchwood needles, which I had not seen before. In addition, some hand-knitted garments were displayed for sale with price tags.

This store is located 10 minutes from my home and seriously wish I could live right beside it! The owner Wendy is always friendly and so very helpful. She's definitely an advanced knitter because she makes exquisite sample items for her store window. There is a great selection of novelty, cotton, wool and other yarns, as well as needlepoint canvases and threads. She also runs JB Designs, which has a great selection of designer quilting and knitting bags.

Nice and very friendly yarn shop owned and operated by Erma Tardiff since 1975. She has patterns, yarns, threads and lots of wool for needlework too. This shop also has machine knitting and cones of yarn. Good size shop to be run by one person. Erma also is the teacher too. Good selection of yarns. Well worth a stop. 11/07

I love this shop. Her yarns are easy to find as she has them categorized by type in different rooms. Rosaline, the owner, has a room with yarns suitable for Florida, a baby room, a natural fiber room, etc. It will take your hours to tour all the rooms and yarn! She also has high end yarns, like hand dyed silk and loads of patterns and magazines. Best of all she has leather swivel chairs in the front of the store so you can sit and knit with others. Of course there are classes for all levels of knitters. Rosaline is very friendly and will help your select the best yarn and color for your pattern. My favorite aspect about this store is she is open on Sundays! Rosaline listened to her customers as they requested that she be open on Sundays for us working folks. So she changed her hours and closed her store on Mondays to be open on Sunday. On Sundays if she is not busy, Rosaline will sit with us and knit and chat. I think that is awesome as we get to see what neat project she is working on. I could just go on and on about this yarn store, but you will just have to visit to see for yourself. 11/09

I was on a recent visit to Palm Beach and inadvertenly left my 35mm circs on the plane (ouch!) When I drove out of the airport I saw this big red Great Balls of YARN sign at the corner of Dixie & Belvedere. Anyhow, I stumbled upon this new yarn store and found the best kept secret in Florida. This store was clean, well-organized and is the only store in Florida that I've seen carry a great selection of cashmere and angora. Imagine knitting with that in August! Their selection was huge!! I loved their samples and the people were really nice. They offer one on one assistance as needed as well as classes. My husband and I are going back this winter and staying at the Breakers. I can't wait to get back there. They are having a knitting cruise in February with a bunch of designers and lessons and I think that looks like a lot of fun.

This is largely in part to Marney Gibson, the owner, who has the most beautiful yarns and accessories you could imagine. Marney's shop welcomes you with a feeling you are at home in your family room, and when friends come by we all chat and knit together. Many of us meet regularly to share stories and knit new creations. Additionally, Marney is always there to help, guide and encourage us with her fabulous knitting talent.

We are fortunate to have Knits 'N Krafts in our area (it's a half-hour drive for me). The owner, Carol, is extremely helpful in solving your knitting or crocheting problems, in suggesting patterns, yarns and yarn alternatives. She is always on her toes with a ready suggestion for a new pattern or project you just can't live without. Her little shop is crammed (floor to ceiling) with every kind of yarn imaginable. Her prices are lower than in other shops in this area of Florida and she always has boxes and boxes of bargains. There are always gals sitting around the table knitting, crocheting or just visiting. It's a very happy and friendly place to visit. I almost always leave with a bag of yarn and a warm fuzzy feeling for having been there.

While vacationing in Florida I was fortunate to visit this lovely little shop in Seminole. Carol was very welcoming without being overbearing or pushy. Her selections of yarns was incredible especially for Florida -- having a wide selection of sock yarns and light wools as well as other popular yarns. Also around the shop were boxes and baskets of discounted/sale yarns. And of course Prism Yarns and patterns. All moderately priced.

Carol is a retired school teacher, education's lose, but quick to help you out with any problem you maybe having with a current project or in deciding on a project. She also teaches knitting in shop, just ask her and she'll make the time to sit down and teach you.

This was a great shop to visit and I look to forward to my visit on my return trip to Florida next year.

I have been knitting since I was a child, and have been to any knitting shops the world over. I have never been to one that can match The Knitting Patch. This store feels like you are at home. The owner, Lora, is very helpful, and extremely knowledgeable. All of the numerous examples in the store were knitted by her (some of which have won awards in competition)! The store is incredibly tidy, and well organized. Moreover her inventory is incredible. This store has more inventory than any knitting store I have ever visited. Lora is very engaging, and tries to be helpful, and willingly shares her knowledge. I found The Knitting Patch quite by accident, and it is now the only store I go to. Her prices are very fair and competitive, not elevated the way so many stores do. If you can't find it at The Knitting Patch it probably does not exist. 3/12

She has a nice variety of yarns and knitted samples of various sweaters from baby to adult sizes. She also has baskets of discounted yarns for sale. I was able to buy several 3.5 oz light worsted wool skeins for $2/each (her normal price was $6.95) to make mittens with. They have lessons at her shop and she also mail orders for you.

It is a nice shop. However, I now realize that the pricing is way out of line. Berroco Comfort Sock was $16. I almost bought some until my friend pointed out that it was only $8 in the store we had previously been to. I bought 8 balls of Jojoland Melody and a shawl pattern. I was on a Ladies Day Out and didn't pay attention. A month later I started knitting the shawl and saw the receipt. They charged me $10/ball! I then started pricing it all over. The prices were from $5.95 - $6.50/ball. A bit of a markup is ok, but I feel that this is a ripoff. My whole group won't go there again. There are not that many shops in our area, so it is a shame. 6/10

Although the store was so busy, the wonderful friendly staff made sure that everyone was helped. They were so wonderful in offering suggestions from what yarn they would use to an easy pattern for the shawl. The had an unbelievable selection of yarns and several knitted finished products so you could see what the yarn looked like knitted up. I will definitely return to this store anytime I am in Sarasota.
