In The Making
3114 Heights Village
Birmingham, AL 35243

Reviewed Lesley D.

Once I walk in the doors of In the Making, I'm greeted by smiling faces and the incredible aroma of fiber tranquility. The ladies of In the Making are super nice, and they are quick to help you with your every fibery need. The prices are good and they are constantly getting in the latest crazes of yarn! In the Making is a great place to just sit and knit as well. They have knit nights 2 Thursdays out of the month and they do offer several knitting classes. 3/08

This is a lovely little store in an area that desperately needed a local yarn shop (others are quite a distance away). The owner, Joan Cole, has created a homey and inviting atmosphere, where one feels more like a friend than a customer. With a wide array of quality yarns, needles, patterns, magazines, and notions, you won't be disappointed by the selections. Mrs. Cole also offers classes on a variety of techniques, from beginner to advanced, knitting and crochet. I highly recommend dropping by the Knit N Stitch when you're in town!

My friend Bunny and I stumbled upon The Knitting Zone through local word of mouth. It was an important enough discovery that I felt this venue would be a better place to hear about this marvelous knitting store. The cute little shop is set up for a mail order business but that doesn't stop the owner Mary and assistants Sam and Laura from taking time to show new inventory, point out specials, or to help you figure out a pattern. In fact; the real jewel in this operation is that Mary is a computer geek and can instantly find out compatible yarn if they don't have what is called for in your pattern. If you fall in love with a yarn and don't have a pattern in mind; she can even plug in your requirements and zap out a pattern complete with yardage requirements. The Knitting Zone even carries all the tools of the trade such as needles, tape measures and row counters so that you can begin your project in the car on the way home. All of this in one place as well as a friendly, knowledgeable staff makes you think you died and went to knitting heaven.

I recently visited the University of Alabama for a workshop and, of course, my first activity upon checking into my hotel was to haul the phone book out and look up local yarn shops. WOW is all I can say. When I walked into Serendipity, I found a friendly, helpful staff eager to help me locate what I was looking for. The yarns were all arranged by color and my biggest problem was deciding on which yarn was going home with me. In fact, the choice was so tough, that I ended up bringing home several additions for my stash! I highly recommend visiting Serendipity Needleworks if you're ever in Tuscaloosa...just be sure and allow at least 3 hours for browsing! Not only do they have yarns from all the top companies, but they also have a huge selection of books and patterns, needles, and gadgets!

This is a wonderfully friendly store located just outside of Birmingham in the quaint college town of Montevallo. They have an eclectic inventory of yarns, offer a broad assortment of needles, patterns and other accessories, and support other fiber-related interests as well (crochet, spinning, weaving). Just a little bit off the beaten path, and well worth it! 3/08

Lovely shop with lots to offer. With yarns, needlepoint, cross stitch, and beads you will find what you need to complete almost any project. I enjoyed a wonderful morning visit with Susan on the way back from a business meeting. 12/09

I was visiting a non-knitting friend in Alabama who researched the favorite knit shops for me. One shop's name was always mentioned...Yarn Expressions. Wow, were these gals right! My friend left me there for three hours before pulling me out. However, she took home a skein and circular needles and a hat is on the way!! The shop is well organized and you can see and reach everything. Lots of room, but still cozy and great light.Their selection is unlimited and they have the latest books and mags. I had never stepped foot in the place yet I felt like I was coming home. I highly suggest dropping the kids at the Space Center and heading to Yarn Expressions.

This is the first yarn shop I've ever shopped in and it is the best so far. The ladies are great to the first time knitter as well as the experienced one. The yarn is varied and gorgeous, reasonably priced. They have all the goodies..books, needles, samples, buttons...and there is the CUTEST little dog who will greet you when you visit. I love to go there and just browse but rarely do I get out the door without buying something. 6/09
