Back: With smaller needles, CO 78 (88, 98) sts and work in k2, p2 rib for 2 inches. Change to larger needles and work square patterns beginning with Large Squares first. Repeat Large Squares 3 times (6 bands of squares equal 60 rows). Knit 2 rows. On next RS row, begin Medium Squares pattern and repeat 3 times for 30 rows (6 bands of Medium Squares). At the same time when piece measures 15 inches from beg of ribbing, shape armholes beginning with RS row: Decrease at each edge every other row: 2 sts twice, then one st 4 (6, 7) times-66 (72, 80) sts remain. (To dec 2 sts, slip 2 sts tog knitwise, k1, pass sl sts over k sts.) When Medium Squares pattern is completed, knit 2 rows. On next RS row begin Small Squares, matching edges of squares with those of medium squares just completed. When piece is 24 inches from beg of ribbing, shape neck opening: On next RS row, work across 22 (24, 27) sts, attach 2nd ball of yarn to bind off center 22 (24, 26) sts and work across remaining 22 (24, 27) sts. Keeping in Small Squares pattern, work each shoulder at same time but with separate ball of yarn. On next RS row and keeping to pattern, BO 2 sts at each neck edge 2 times-18 (20, 23) sts remain on each side. BO when armhole depth is 10 inches. Completed back should be 25 inches including ribbing. Front: Work as for Back until piece is 22 inches from beg of ribbing. Shape neck: Beg on next RS row, BO center 6 (8, 10) sts using 2nd ball of yarn. Work each shoulder at same time but separately. On next RS row BO 3 sts at each neck edge 2 times. Then dec one st 6 times at neck edges. BO when front is same length to shoulder as back. Sleeves: With smaller needles, CO 40 sts and work k2, p2 rib for 2 inches. End with WS row. Knit next RS row, inc 24 sts evenly across work-64 sts. Knit WS next row even. Begin working the Large Squares, working only the directions between the *'s, for 60 rows (3 repeats). At the same time, begin sleeve shaping: Inc one st each edge every 6 rows 10 times -84 sts. When Large Squares pattern is complete, knit 2 rows. Begin Medium Squares pattern. When sleeve measures 18", shape top of sleeve: Dec 2 sts at each edge every other row 3 times and then dec one st each edge every other row 4 times-64 sts. Sleeve should measure 20" including ribbing. BO. Finishing: Sew shoulder seams. Mark top center of sleeve and match them to shoulder seams. Sew sleeves to armhole edges easing any fullness across sleeve top. Sew side and sleeve seams starting at bottom of ribbing and working toward armholes. With circular needle and RS facing, pick up 34 sts from back of neck opening and 42 sts from front-86 sts. Knit 8 rounds in k2, p2 rib. BO in rib. © Crystal Palace Yarns and used with their permission. See Abbreviations and the Glossary for help. |
