Trellis Stitch Shawl Collar Cardigan Knitting PatternDesigned by Barbara BreiterMedium Finished chest measurement=40" Gauge: 13 sts and 20 rows = 4" in pattern stitch with larger needles Materials: 5 skeins Bartlett Yarn 2 ply or appropriate substitution 100% wool 210 yards/4 ounces Size 9 US (5.5 mm) straight needles Size 9 US (5.5 mm) 29" or longer circular needles Size 10½ (6.5 mm) straight needles Stitch holder Stitch markers 6 buttons Instructions Pattern Stitch - Trellis Stitch Row 1: (RS) k1, p3, *with yarn in front (wyif), sl 3 purlwise, p3; rep from * to last st, k1 Row 2: p1, k3, *with yarn in back (wyib), sl 3 purlwise, k3; rep from * to last st, p1 Row 3: k1, p3, *k3, p3; rep from * to last st, k1 Row 4: p1, k3, *p3, k3; rep from * to last st, p1 Row 5: k5, *insert point of right hand needle upwards under the 2 strands in front of the sl sts and knit the next st, then lift the 2 strands over the point of the right hand needle (referred to as pull up loop henceforth), k5; rep from * to end Row 6: Rep Row 3 Row 7: p1, *wyif sl 3 purlwise; p3; rep from * to last 4 sts, sl 3 purlwise, p1 Row 8: k1, *wyib sl 3 purlwise, k3; rep from * to last 4 sts, sl 3 purlwise, k1 Row 9: Rep Row 4 Row 10: Rep Row 3 Row 11: k2, *pull up loop, k5; rep from * to last 3 sts, pull up loop, k2 Row 12: Rep Row 4 Rep Rows 1-12 Back With smaller needles, CO 56 sts. Work k1, p1 ribbing 3". Inc 9 sts evenly over last row - 65 sts. Change to larger needles and work in Pattern Stitch 13" or desired length. Shape Armhole BO 3 st beg next 2 rows. Keeping to pattern, dec 1 st each end every other row 4 times. Continue in Pattern Stitch until armhole measures 9" or desired length. BO 7 st beg next 4 rows. Place rem 23 st on holder. Front (Make 2) With smaller needles, CO 32 sts. Work k1, p1 ribbing 3". Change to larger needles and work in Pattern Stitch 13" or desired length. Shape Armhole And Neck BO 3 sts at armhole. Keeping to pattern, dec 1 st every other row 4 times at armhole. At the same time, at neck edge dec 1 st every other row 7 times, then every 4th row 7 times. Continue in Pattern Stitch until armhole measures 9" or desired length. At armhole, BO 7 sts, work back, BO 7 sts. Sleeves With smaller needles, CO 29 sts. Work k1, p1 ribbing 3". Change to larger needles and work in Pattern Stitch. Keeping to pattern, inc 1 st each end every 8th row 7 times - 43 sts. Work even in Pattern Stitch until sleeve measures 18" from beg or desired length. BO 3 sts beg next 2 rows. Dec 1 st every other row 7 times, then every 6th row 3 times. BO 17 sts. Collar And Buttonhole Bands Seam shoulders. With circular needles, pick up sts along neck edge from bottom ribbing to neckline, place marker; knit stitches from back of neck holder, place marker; pick up sts along neck edge from neckline to bottom ribbing for remainder of the band. Please see Picking up Stitches For Necklines And Armholes for more information. Work k1, p1 ribbing for 7 rows. On the 4th row, make buttonholes, spacing 7 buttonholes evenly. BO in ribbing to neckline point (first marker). From marker to marker, work 4 stitch short rows 8 times as follows: Work k1, p1 ribbing to within 4 sts of marker, turn, sl 1, work k1, p1 ribbing=one short row. BO all remaining sts in ribbing.
