Popcorn Top Kilt Hose

Kilt Hose

Materials
200-300g DK or Sport weight weight yarn
US #6 straight needles
1 set of US #6 dpns (4)
Reinforcing thread or wool

Gauge
28 rows and 22 sts=4 inches

Popcorn Pattern
Row 1: P all sts.
Row 2: K1*, P3 tog, K1P1K1 into next st; rep from * to last st, K1.

Cuff
With #6 straight needles cast on 61 sts.
Work in rib for 2 rows.
Row 1: K1, (K2, P2) to end.
Row 2: P2, K2 to last st;K1.
Work popcorn pattern for 4 inches, ending with a first row.
Work in ribbing as before until 3 rows less than popcorn.
Now work in stockinette (K1 row, P1 row) until desired length to ankle is reached. At the same time, K2tog at beginning and end of row on rows 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80.

Heel Flap And Heel
Using dpns K (on to first needle) 10 st. Then (on to second needle) K12, K2tog, K11, then (third needle) K10.
Then K sts from needle #1 onto needle #3.
Working on these 20 back sts only, P one row.
Tie on reinforcing thread.
Row 1: K1, Sl1 to last st, end K1.
Row 2: P to end.
Work these two rows for 14 rows.

Turn Heel
Sl1, K12, K2togtbl, turn
Row 1: Sl1, P7, K2tog, turn
Row 2: Sl1, K7, K2togtbl, turn
Work these two rows until 8 sts remain.
Break off reinforcing thread.

Gusset
Using dpns K4 sts from middle of back.
On same needle pick up and knit 10 sts from heel flap and heel.
Next needle K to end.
On third needle pick up and K 10 sts from heel flap and heel.
Then remaining 4 sts from back needle.
Decreasing on 1st and 3rd needle only (front needle K all rounds):
Round 1: K to last 3sts. K2tog, K1. Then K1, K2togtbl, K to end.
Round 2: K all sts.
Work these two rounds until 10 sts remain on 1st and 3rd needles.

Foot And Toe
Work K all rounds until foot measures 2 inches less than desired length.
Tie on reinforcing thread.
Round 1: K until 4 sts remain. K2tog, K2. Then K2, K2togtbl, K until 4 sts rem on needle. K2tog, K2. Then K2, K2tbl, k to end.
Round 2: K all sts.
Work these two rows for 11 rounds.
K sts from needle #1 onto needle #2. You should now have 2 needles in work.
Using 3 needle method, bind off.

Sew in all loose ends.
Turn inside out and sew up seam as far as cuff.
Turn right side out and sew cuff seam.
Fold cuff down over ribbing.

You may want to add more sts for a wider leg. This pattern is based on about a 16-17" calf. Just remember to decrease the extra sts or work them into the foot.
