Garter Stitch Hat

Garter Stitch Hat

Knit by Nancy Swinburnson and modeled by her grandnewphew Brenden

This is an unusual hat; more like a hat and scarf or neckwarmer in one...or a helmet. It fits toddlers and kids up to about age 5.

Materials:
4 ounces worsted weight yarn
Size 8 (5 mm) needles or size needed to obtain gauge
One button
stitch holders

Gauge:
16 sts=4" in St st

Instructions
Starting at bottom (neck), CO 72 sts. Work in k2, p2 ribbing for 2½". About halfway, make one buttonhole.

Next row: K2, P2, K2, P2, K56, sl last 8 sts to holder, turn, K56 sts, and sl last 8 sts to holder.

K 5½" in garter st (knit every row) then work top of helmet as follows:
Row 1: K36, Sl1, K1, psso, turn
Row 2: Sl1, K16, Sl1, K1, psso, turn
Repeat Row 2 until all sts have been worked (18 sts remain).
Break yarn.

Sl 8 sts from one holder onto needle, pick up 21 sts along right side, K across the 18 sts, pick up 21 sts from other side, then K2, P2, K2, P2 from other holder (76 sts together). Work in k2, p2 ribbing for 1". BO. Sew on button.
