Braided Ear Flap Hat Knitting Pattern

Super fast to knit due to the big gauge, the braids can be done in the main color instead if you wish...or use I-cord as an alternative. This hat is great for boys or girls.

Size:
Fits children about ages 6 to 14

Gauge:
12 sts and 20 rows=4" in St st with Iceland

Materials:
Iceland by Crystal Palace Yarns
100% wool
109 yards/100 grams
One ball #1015 Ivory (Color A)
Poof by Crystal Palace Yarns
100% fleecy nylon
47 yards/50 grams
One ball #9433 Circus (Color B)
Size 11 US (8 mm) double pointed needles
Size 11 US (8 mm) 16" circular needles
Stitch holder
Tapestry needle

Braided Ear Flap Hat Knitting Pattern

Instructions
Ear Flaps
With A, CO 3 sts. Work back and forth:
Rows 1 and 2: k1, p1, k1
Row 3: k into front and back of first st, p1, k into front and back of last st - 5 sts
Row 4: k into front and back of first st, k1, p1, k1, k into front and back of last st - 7 sts
Row 5: k into front and back of first st, (p1, k1) twice, p1, k into front and back of last st - 9 sts
Cont in pattern as est, keeping to Seed Stitch pattern (knit the purls and purl the knits as they face you), until you have 17 sts.
Work 4 rows even in Seed Stitch.
Next Row: ssk, work seed st to last 2 sts, k2tog - 15 sts
Next Row: Work even in Seed St.
Rep last 2 rows once more.
Cut yarn. Place rem 11 sts on holder.

Make another ear flap. Do not cut yarn and leave sts on needle.

Join Ear Flaps And Begin Hat
With circular needles, work Seed St over 11 sts on needle. Using the Cable Cast On, CO 19 sts (for front of hat). Work Seed St over 11 sts on holder. Using the Cable Cast On, CO 15 sts (for back of hat) - 56 sts
Join and mark beg of rnd.
Work Seed St 5 rnds.
Work 1" (5 rnds) St st (knit every round)
Begin Slip Stitch Pattern:
Rnd 1: With B, *p1, sl 1 with yarn in back; rep from *
Rnd 2: With B, *k1, sl 1 with yarn in back; rep from *
Rnd 3: With A, *sl 1 with yarn in back, p1; rep from *
Rnd 4: With A, *sl 1 with yarn in back, k1; rep from *
Rep Rnds 1-4, then 1-2.
With A, work in St st 3 rnds (½").
Decrease Crown
Change to double points when sts no longer fit on circulars.
Rnd 1: *K5, k2tog; rep from * around - 48 sts
Rnds 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10: K
Rnd 3: *K4, k2tog; rep from * around - 40 sts
Rnd 5: *K3, k2tog; rep from * around - 32 sts
Rnd 7: *K2, k2tog; rep from * around - 24 sts
Rnd 9: *K1, k2tog; rep from * around - 16 sts
Rnd 11: *K2tog; rep from * around - 8 sts

Cut yarn, leaving a tail. Thread tail through tapestry needle and through rem 8 sts and remove from needle. Pull tightly to close top of hat. Weave in ends on WS.

Cut 6 36" lengths of B. Thread 3 lengths through bottom of ear flap (one strand in each space). Pull through and stop half way so each strand is doubled. Braid and knot. Repeat for other ear flap.
