Ripple Christmas Stocking Knitting PatternDesigned by Marjorie Arnott Knit by Barbara Breiter. SizeApprox 22 inches long Materials Worsted wt yarn, 2 oz each green, red and white Size 8 straight and double pointed needles Crochet hook size E 3 stitch holders Gauge In St st 9 sts = 2 inches; 13 rows = 2 inches Abbreviations M1: Pick up the horizontal strand between last st worked and next st, place on left needle and knit in the back loop of this st. Pattern Stitch Row 1: *K1, m1, k5, sl1, k2to, psso, k5, m1, k1; rep from * across. Row 2: Purl across. Rep Rows 1 and 2 for patt. Instructions Starting at top of stocking, with straight needles and green, cast on 60 sts loosely. Purl 1 row. Work Patt Rows 1 and 2, twice; cut green. Join red and rep Patt Rows 1 and 2, 3 times; cut red. Join white and rep Patt Rows 1 and 2, 3 times. Working in patt, work (6 rows green, 6 rows red and 6 rows white) 3 times more: Total of 12 stripes. Cut yarn. Instep With RS facing, slip first 15 sts to holder for heel, join green and work Patt Row 1 on next 30 sts; slip last 15 sts on holder for heel. Continue in pat on 30 sts, working 5 more rows green, 6 rows red and 6 rows white. With green, rep Patt Rows 1 and 2 twice, then rep Pat Row 1 once. Dec Row: *P2tog, (p4, p2tog) twice, p1; rep from * once: 24 sts. Cut yarn and slip sts for instep on holder. Heel Tab: Slip 15 sts from each holder to one double pointed needle. With RS facing, join green and work as follows: Dec Row: *K2tog, (k4, k2tog) twice, k1; rep from * once: 24 sts. Next Row: Purl across. Cont in St st, working 4 more rows green, 6 rows red and 6 rows white. Turn Heel Join green and work as follows: Row 1: K17, ssk, turn. Row 2: Sl1, p10, p2to, turn. Row 3: Sl1, k10, ssk, turn. Rep Rows 2 and 3 until all sts are worked and 12 sts rem, ending by working Row 2; cut yarn. Instep Gusset With double pointed needles and RS facing, join red at beg side edge of heel tab, pick up 14 sts along this edge, knit across 12 sts of heel tab, pick up 14 sts along other side of heel tab: 40 sts. Purl 1 row. Shape Gusset Row 1: K1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. Row 2: Purl across. Rep Rows 1 and 2 until 24 sts rem, ending by working Row 2. Working in rnds, knit across 24 heel sts, place marker, knit across 24 instep sts, place marker for beg of rnd: 48 sts. Cont to knit in rnds until foot measures 8 inches from heel turning, ending at beg of rnd. Shape Toe Rnd 1: *K1, ssk, knit to 3 sts before marker, k2tog, k1, slip marker; rep from * once. Rnd 2: Knit around. Rep Rnds 1 and 2, 5 times more: 24 sts. With 12 sts on each of 2 double pointed needles, weave toe seam. Finishing Sew side and back seams. If desired, work a row of sc around top of stocking as follows: Join green in back seam, *sc in each st to peak, in center peak st work (2 sc, ch3, sl st in first ch st, sc) all in same st; rep from * 3 times more, join in first sc, ch15, sl st in same sc (forming hanging loop); finish off. Weaving on Needles To weave two St st edges together, have the sts on 2 knitting needles, one behind the other, yarn threaded into a yarn needle, all at the right hand side of the work with the wrong sides of work touching. Insert the threaded yarn needle into the first st on the front knitting needle as if to purl it and draw the yarn through, leaving the st on the knitting needle. *Insert the yarn needle into the first st on the back knitting needle as if to purl it and slip it off the knitting needle, then insert the yarn needle into the next st on the back needle as if to knit it and leave it on the knitting needle, but draw the yarn through. Insert the yarn needle into the first st on the front knitting needle as if to knit it and slip it off the knitting needle, then insert the yarn needle into the next st on the front needle as if to purl it, leaving it on the knitting needle, but pulling the yarn through. Rep from * until all the sts have been worked off. When you draw the yarn through, don't pull it too tightly or leave it slack.
