Join, mark beg of round. *k8, p1; rep from * around. Work until about 5 inches for a baby, or 6 for a toddler size. If a larger size is wanted, go up a needle size, and work until 6½ or 7 inches before you begin the decreasing. Or add another multiple of 9 stitches (8 knits and 1 purl).
