Knitting Pattern For Hat With Christmas Ornament Top

knit Christmas hat

Knit by Sarah Bradberry from a free knitting pattern located here.

Materials:
16" circular needle and dpns in desired size for yarn (I used a size 6 for 1 and a size 7.  You could go up to a size 9 with worsted weight yarn)

100-150 yards of yarn in main color

10-15 yards of yarn in a metallic for the top of the ornament

Pattern:
Cast on 81 stitches.  Join  without twisting. Knit in stockinette until desired length (6-7" for a child)

Begin decreases (decreasing 9 stitches every decrease row) switching to dpns when necessary.

Row 1:  *knit 7, K2tog*  repeat around
Row 2:  K
Row 3:  *Knit 6, K2tog* repeat
Row 4:  K
Row 5:  *Knit 5, K2tog*
Row 6:  K
Row 7:  * Knit 4, k2tog*
Row 8-10:  K
Row 11 (begin color pattern):  K2 MC, *K1 metallic, K4 MC*  repeat, ending with K2 MC
Row 12: same as Row 9
Row 13-14: K1 MC, *K3 metallic, K2 MC* repeat, ending K1 MC
Row 15-16: K with metallic (you're done with the MC)
Row 17 (turning row): Purl with metallic
Row 18: K with metallic
Begin crown decreases:
Row 19: *K3, K2tog*
Row 20: *K2, K2tog*
Row 21: *K1, K2tog*
Row 22: *K2tog*

Fasten off by running yarn through the live stitches.

Crochet a "hanging loop" and attach to the top.
