Christmas Ornament Hat Knitting Pattern

knit Christmas hat

This pattern for a hat looks like a Christmas ornament. It fits older kids and with a small adjustment will fit an adult.

Materials:
100-150 yards worsted weight yarn (MC)
10-15 yards of metallic yarn for the top of the ornament hat
Size 8 US (5 mm) 16" circulars or size needed to obtain gauge
Size 8 US (5 mm) set of double pointed needles

Gauge:
16 sts=4" in St st

Instructions
CO 81 st. Making sure sts aren't twisted, join and mark beg of round.
Knit in St st until desired length (6-7" for a child).

Begin decreases (decreasing 9 stitches every decrease row) switching to double points when sts no longer fit.

Row 1: *K7, k2tog* repeat around
Row 2: K
Row 3: *K6, k2tog* repeat around
Row 4: K
Row 5: *K5, k2tog* repeat around
Row 6: K
Row 7: *K4, k2tog* repeat around
Row 8: K
Row 9 (begin color pattern): K2 MC, *K1 metallic, K4 MC* repeat around, ending with K2 MC
Row 10: K
Row 11-12: K1 MC, *K3 metallic, K2 MC* repeat around, ending with K1 MC
Row 13-15: K with metallic (you're done with the MC)
Row 16 (turning row): Purl with metallic
Row 17: K with metallic

Begin crown decreases:

Row 18: *K3, k2tog* repeat around
Row 19: *K2, k2tog* repeat around
Row 20: *K1, k2tog* repeat around
Row 21: *k2tog* repeat around

Cut yarn leaving a long tail. Thread through tapestry needle and thread through sts on needle. Pull tightly to close top of hat.

Crochet a chain for the hanging loop and attach to the top.
