Christmas Ball Ornament Knitting Pattern

This beautiful Fair Isle Christmas ornament is knit in the round on double points. It will adorn your family tree for years to come.

3½" high by 3½" wide

Gauge:
24 sts=4" in St st

Christmas Ball Ornament Knitting Pattern

Materials:
1 ball Merino 5 or Fjord by Crystal Palace Yarns in red - CC
1 ball Merino 5 or Fjord by Crystal Palace Yarns in white - MC
Size 6 US (4.25 mm) double pointed needles
Large eyed tapestry needle or crochet hook
Material for stuffing (polyester fiberfill, yarn leftovers)
Hanging loop (ribbon or yarn braid)

3 ornaments can be made with 2 balls of yarn
Red and white ornament was knit with red and white Fjord; green and white ornament was knit with Merino 5.

Instructions (corrected 11/4/11)
First half
CO 60 sts in MC. Divide evenly over 4 needles. Join, making sure sts are not twisted.
Follow either written instructions or the chart.

Rnd 0: *K10, place marker; rep from * around.
Rnd 1: *K2-MC, K1-CC, K2-MC, K1-CC, K3-MC, K1-CC; rep from * 6 times.
Rnd 2: *K1-MC, K2-CC, K2MC, K2-CC, K2-MC, K1-CC; rep from * 6 times.
Rnd 3: *K2-CC, K4-MC, K2-CC, K2tog-CC; rep from * 6 times.
Rnd 4: *K1-CC, K2-MC, K1-CC, K3-MC, K2-CC; rep from * 6 times.
Rnd 5: *K2-MC, K3-CC, K3-MC, K1-CC; rep from * 6 times.
Rnd 6: *K1-MC, K2CC, K1-MC, K2-CC, K1-MC, K2tog-CC; rep from * 6 times.
Rnd 7: *K2-CC, K3-MC, K3-CC); rep from * 6 times.
Rnd 8: *K1-CC, K5-MC, K2tog-CC; rep from * 6 times.
Rnd 9: *K2-MC, K1-CC,K3-MC, K1-CC; rep from * 6 times.

Rnd 11: *K1-CC, K2-MC, K1-CC, K2tog-CC; rep from * 6 times.

Rnd 13: *K2-MC, K2tog-CC; rep from * 6 times.
Rnd 14: *K1-MC, K2tog-CC; rep from * 6 times.

Cut yarn, leaving tail of about 8". Pass CC tail through all stitches on needles as if to purl; pull to tighten. Secure both tails on wrong side.

Second half
If desired, reverse colors from first half, as shown in Merino 5 green/white version.
Turn work so CO edge is up. With CC, pick up 60 sts. To line up pattern, first st picked up should be in st to left of a dec line. Divide evenly over 4 needles. Join, making sure sts are twisted.
Repeat Rnds 2-15 as for first half. Cut yarn, leaving tails of about 8". Pass CC tail through all stitches on needles as if to purl.
Stuff ball to desired shape.
Pull CC tail to close hole. Secure both tails on wrong side.
Squeeze ball to even out shape.
Attach hanging loop to one end of ball.
