Textured Striped Hat Knitting Pattern

Textured Striped Hat Knitting Pattern

This knitting pattern features a wide garter stitch brim. The stripes on the hat are knit as purl ridges; use a boucle type yarn for additional texture.

Size:
Fits large child or adult.

Gauge:
16 sts and 19 rows=4" in stockinette

Yarn:
1 skein Lion Brand Cotton-Ease (MC)
Licorice-color 153
50% cotton/50% acrylic
3.5 ounces/207 yards
Small amount of worsted weight yarn in red (CC). A textured boucle, such as Sensations Rainbow Boucle, contrasts nicely.

Needles:
Size 9 US (5.5 mm) 16" or 20" circulars or size needed to obtain gauge
Size 9 US (5.5 mm) double point needles

Instructions:

With MC, CO 96 sts on circular needles. Join, being careful not to twist sts. Work 6 rows of garter st (k 1 row, p 1 row)
*k4, k2tog; rep from * - 80 sts
K 6 rows
P 1 row.
Change to CC and k 1 row then p 1 row.
Change to MC and k 7 rows then p 1 row.
Change to CC and k 1 row then p 1 row.
Change to MC and k 7 rows then p 1 row.
Change to CC and k 1 row then p 1 row.

Change to MC and work even until hat measures 6½" from beg.

Crown
Change to double points when sts no longer fit on circular needle.

Row 1: *k3, k2tog; rep from *
Rows 2, 4, 6, and 8: k
Row 3: *k2, k2tog; rep from *
Row 5: *k1, k2tog; rep from *
Row 7: k2tog across
Row 9: k2tog across

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. With blunt needle, thread tail through remaining sts and pull tightly to close top of hat. Weave in loose ends on WS.
