This is my little and big Stars and Stripes. Little was made with fingering weight yarn and size 4 needles (American). It is small enough to fit a grapefruit. Could be made smaller by using smaller size needles.

I cast on with a half hitch or looped cast on. Then when I finished knitting, I picked up the cast on stitches and did a 3 needle cast off. I skipped the k2tog, k3, k2tog, yo, which makes the holes for gathering at the top of the hat. I purl the first stitch and slip the last stitch of each row, as if to knit. Then when finished I just gathered through every other side stitch and pulled up tight. This forms the top of the hat.

Use the pattern for the spiral hat found here to make this hat. There are 7 red and 6 white stripes. The star section is 5 rows of stars. I pulled the hat together 5 rows in from the edge, making a top knot like the vertical striped one on the regular pattern.
