Striped Seed Stitch Hat Knitting Pattern For Children

There are a number of variations possible. You could knit this in one color (for which you will need only one ball of yarn). You might work the Seed Stitch bands in stockinette or a different stitch pattern. Or you could knit a different color for each sequence.

Size:
Fits children about ages 2 to 6. To fit older children, add an additional four stitches and work the ribbing one more inch (note you'll need to begin the crown decreases k4, k2tog around instead of as written).

Gauge:
17 sts and 24 rows=4" in St st

Materials:
Size 8 US (5 mm) 16" circular and double point needles or size needed to obtain gauge

One ball color #102 Cornflower (Color A)
One ball color #016 Fern (Color B)
140 yards/50 grams
80% Australian Merino/20% nylon

Instructions:

With Color A, CO 80 sts. Join, being careful sts aren't twisted and mark beg of rnd.
Work k2, p2 ribbing for 1½":
Rnd 1: *k2, p2; rep around
Rep this Rnd.

Work 8 Rnds in St st (k every round).

With Color B, work 6 Rnds in seed st:
Rnd 1: *k1, p1; rep around
Rnd 2: *p1, k1; rep around

With Color A, work 8 Rnds in St st.

With Color B, work 6 Rnds in seed st.

With Color A, begin crown decreases. Change to double points when sts no longer fit on circular needle.

Rnd 1: *k3, k2tog; rep from * around
Rnd 2: knit
Rnd 3: *k2, k2tog; rep from * around
Rnd 4: knit
Rnd 5: *k1, k2tog; rep from * around
Rnd 6: knit
Rnd 7: k2tog around
Rnd 8: knit
Rnd 9: k2tog around

Cut yarn, leaving long tail. Thread through tapestry needle and thread through each rem st on needle as if to purl, taking sts off needle. Pull tightly to close top of hat. Weave in ends on WS.

Fold up brim to desired length.
