Cable Ear Flap Hat With Pom Poms Knitting Pattern

This hat is a bit more of a challenging knitting pattern but well worth the effort. The pom poms can be omitted or changed at will; make one pom pom only if you wish and attach with an I-Cord for example.

Fishermen's Wool Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn
100% Pure Virgin Wool
8 ounces/227 grams
465 yards/425 meters
One ball #123 Oatmeal (Color A)
One ball #126 Nature's Brown (Color B)
Size 9 US (5.5 mm) double pointed needles
Size 9 US (5.5 mm) 16" or 20" circular needles
Stitch holder
Size G crochet hook
Tapestry needle

Instructions(corrected 11/11/11)
Cable
sl 2 to cable needle and hold in front, k2, k2 from cable needle

Ear Flaps
CO 20 sts. Work back and forth in rows.
Row 1 (RS): *p2, k4; rep from *, end p2
Row 2 (WS): *k2, p4; rep from *, end k2
Row 3: k and then p in first st (inc 1), p1, (k4, p2) twice, k4, p1, p and then k in last st (inc 1) - 22 sts
Rows 4 and 6: p1, *k2, p4; rep from *, end k2, p1
Row 5: k1, p2, cable, p2, k4, p2, cable, p2, k1
Row 7: k into front and back of first st, *p2, k4; rep from * to last 3 sts, p2, k into front and back of last st - 24 sts
Rows 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18: p2, *k2, p4; rep from * to last 4 sts, k2, p2
Rows 9, 13, and 15: k2, *p2, k4; rep from * to last 4 sts, p2, k2
Rows 11 and 17: k2, p2, cable, p2, k4, p2, cable, p2, k2
Cut yarn. Place sts on holder.

Make another ear flap. Do not cut yarn and leave sts on needle.

Join Flaps And Begin Hat
RS: Over sts on needle: k2, *p2, k4; rep from *, end p2, k2
Using the Cable Cast On, CO 24 sts (for back of hat).
Work sts from holder, RS facing: k2, *p2, k4; rep from *, end p2, k2
Using the Cable Cast On, CO 36 sts (for front of hat) - 108 sts
Join and mark beg of round.
Rnds 1, 2, and 3: k2, (p2, k4) 3 times, p2, k2, (k1, p1) 12 times, k2, (p2, k4) 3 times, p2, k2, (k1, p1) 18 times
Rnd 4: k2, p2, cable, p2, k4, p2, cable, p2, k2, (k1, p1) 12 times, k2, p2, cable, p2, k4, p2, cable, p2, k2, (k1, p1) 18 times
Rnds 5-9: k2, *p2, k4; rep from *, end p2, k2
Rnd 10: k2, *p2, cable, p2, k4; rep from *, end k2 instead of k4
Rep Rnds 5-10 3 more times. Hat should measure between 5 to 6 inches from the cast on point.
Decrease Crown
Change to double points when sts no longer fit on circulars.
Rnd 1: k2, *p2, k4, p2, k2tog, k2; rep from * around, end p2, k4, p2, k2tog - 99 sts
Rnd 2: k2, *p2, k4, p2, k2tog, k1; rep from * around, end p2, k4, p2. Move end of rnd marker and dec: Slip last st to right needle, remove marker, slip st back to the left needle, k2tog, place marker for end of rnd
Rnd 3: k1, *p2, k4, p2, k2tog; rep from * around, end p2, k4, p2, move end of rnd marker as above, k2tog, pm
Rnd 4: p2, *k4, p1, p2tog, p2; rep from *, end k4, p1, p2tog
Rnd 5: p2, *k4, p1, p2tog, p1; rep from *, end k4, p1, move end of rnd marker as above, p2tog, pm
Rnd 6: *p1, cable, p1, p2tog; rep from *, end p1, cable, p1, move end of rnd marker, p2tog, pm
Rnd 7: *k4, p2tog; rep from *
Rnd 8: *k2, k2tog; rep from *
Rnd 9: *k2, k2tog; rep from *
Rnd 10: *k1, k2tog; rep from *
Rnd 11: *k2tog; rep from *

Cut yarn, leaving a tail. Thread tail through tapestry needle and through rem sts and remove from needle. Pull tightly to close top of hat. Weave in ends on WS.

Pom Pom Decoration
With B, make 6 pom poms.
With A and crochet hook, slip st to the yarn that secured the pom pom. Chain 15. Slip sl to second pom pm. Fasten off. Slip st to the yarn that secured the second pom pom on the other side of where you fastened off. Chain 15. Slip st to third pom pom. Fasten off. Slip st to the yarn that secured the third pom pom on the other side of where you fastened off. Chain 15. Fasten off and secure to ear flap. Rep for other side.
