Mock Cable Baby Hat Knitting Pattern

This is the in the round version by Rheta Rattay, based on the original two needle version here.

This hat fits newborns.

Gauge:
18 sts=4" over pattern st with larger needles

Materials:
Size 6 US (4 mm) double point needles
Size 8 US (5 mm) double point needles
Worsted weight yarn

Instructions:

With smaller needles, CO 70 sts. Join being careful not to twist sts. Mark beg of rnd.
K3, P2 across every rnd until work measures 2 inches. Place stitch marker between last 2 purl stitches (begin pattern after last purl stitch).

Change to larger needles.
Rnd 1: * sl 1, K2, psso, P2; rep to end of rnd
Rnd 2: * K1, yo, K1, P2; rep to end of rnd
Rnds 3 and 4: K3, P2; rep to end of rnd
Repeat Rnds 1 to 4 until work measures 7-7½ inches, ending with Rnd 1.

Shape Top

Rnd 1: K2, P2 to end of rnd
Rnd 2: K2tog, P2tog to end of rnd
Rnd 3: K1, P1 to end of rnd
Rnd 4: K2tog to end of rnd
Rnd 5: Knit
Rnd 6: K2 tog to end of rnd

Cut yarn, leaving about an 8 inch tail. Thread through tapestry needle and pull through rem sts on needle; draw together, then darn the yarn on inside to secure. Add pompom if desired.
