Reversible Two Sizes Baby Hat Knitting Pattern

Designed by Susan Druding

Baby Hat Knitting Pattern

Ever make a hat for a baby and find out it's too small? Or make a hat and see it outgrown in a month or two? This hat solves that problem - it's reversible. Flip one side for smallest heads (2-4 months) then reverse to other side for 5-8 months and up.

Size:
Fits babies 2-4 months or 5-8 months

Gauge:
5 sts= inch in St st on larger needles

Materials:
Size 4 US (3.5 mm) double point needles or size needed to obtain gauge
Size 5 US (3.75 mm) double point needles or size needed to obtain gauge
Crystal Palace Yarns Bunny Hop
50 % micro Acrylic, 42% micro Nylon, 8% rabbit angora
50 grams/1.75 ounces - 113 yards/103 meters
1 ball 0213 Black
1 ball 9575 Circus

Instructions:

With smaller DP needles and Black, CO 72 sts and join in rnd being careful not to twist the sts. Place marker if you like to use one, or leave tail hanging to mark beginning of rnd.
Work in K2,P2 rib for 6 rnds.
Change to larger DPs and change to Circus color.
Work 5 rounds Circus.
3 rnds Black
5 rnds Circus
4 rnds Black
1 rnd Circus

Inc rnd with Circus: Inc 1 st in every other pair of K sts to become 3 sts: *(K1, M1, K1), P2, K2, P2* [81 sts] Next 3 rounds in Circus work: *K2, P2, K1, P1, K1, P2*
rep this sequence for rnd
4 rnds in Black following same st sequence
6 rnds in Circus
3 rnds Black
1 round Circus

2nd inc rnd in Circus: Inc 1 st in each pair of K2 which were not inc'd previously. [89 sts]
3 rnds in Circus thus: *K1, P1, K1, P2* repeat for rnd
4 rnds Black
5 rnds Circus
Change back to smaller DPNs and work 6 rnds Black.
BO in rib pattern.

If the baby is handy, try on the hat to decide which end fits best. If you are able to use the smaller end to fit, using a tapestry needle and Circus color, sew the opposite, larger end, with a large eyed tapestry needle, into a 4-sided + top and tie with a firm bow so that when the baby grows larger you can reverse the ends of the hat.

If you need to use the larger end (as I did) to fit, then you will sew the top with black yarn more firmly as you will not need to reverse the hat.

Add a Pom-Pom made with both colors if you wish. I wound doubled yarn around 4 fingers 26 times, tied in the center and cut loops to make the one shown in the photo. Sew Pom-Pom on top.
