Retro Throw Knitting Pattern

Designed by Knit Picks Design Team

Retro Throw Knitting Pattern

Have fun experimenting with stripes and solids to create a uniquely colored 12 block afghan. Those wanting a more traditional look can choose to knit 12 solid colored blocks instead of incorporating stripes.

Make your throw in Crayon for a bold, textured look or in Suri Dream for a light as air, yet warm and elegant throw. The 3-needle bind off between squares creates a smooth, strong transition and a lovely border.

Instructions
Crayon Version - Basic Block Instructions (make 12)
Using size 10 circular needle, *CO 40 sts, pm, CO 2 sts, pm*. Rep. from * to *3 times for total of 168 sts. Use a different color for the final marker that you place as this will mark the beginning of the row. Join for knitting in the round, being careful not to twist sts.
Rnd 1: Knit
Rnd 2: *SSK, knit to 2 sts before marker, K2tog, slip marker, K2, slip marker. Rep from *.
Rep Rnd 1 and 2 until 8 sts remain. Change colors as desired to create stripes.
Transfer to dpns when necessary.
Cut the yarn. Use yarn needle to thread yarn through last 8 sts. Pull tight and secure.

Finishing
Lay out the 12 blocks, arranging them in the design of your choice.
Join 3 blocks together into a strip as follows.
With one size 10 circular needle and RS facing, pick up and knit 42 stitches along one side. Purl back. Do not cast off.
Rep on second block.
With RS of blocks facing, BO loosely using three-needle bind off. (If you have trouble binding off loosely, use needles that are one size larger.) Cut working yarns, secure and weave in ends.
Continue until you have 4 strips of 3 blocks.
Join the strips as follows. With one size 10 circular needle and RS facing, pick up and knit a total of 128 stitches, (3 blocks including the 2 stitch dividers.) Purl back. Do not cast off.
Rep on second strip.
With RS of strips facing, BO using three-needle bind off. Cut working yarns, secure and weave in ends.
Continue until all 4 strips are connected.

For edging, use attached i-cord as follows.
Starting at one corner, pick up and knit 20 sts using a #10 circular needle. You will pick up more stitches as you need them, 20 sts at a time.
With a new ball of yarn and 1 dpn, use provisional cast on and CO 3 sts.
*Knit 2 sts. Knit the 3rd st and the 1st edge st together. Sl 3 sts on RH needle back onto circular needle. Rep to * around the edge.
At corners, knit the 3 sts on the dpn back and forth a couple of times before joining again. That will give some ease at the corners. Rep several times at each corner if necessary. Use a Kitchener stitch to join live sts to provisional cast on edge.
